Myofunctional therapy is the process of retraining and strengthening the muscles of the face and mouth.
The main goals of myofunctional therapy are:
The tongue is a powerful organ that is often overlooked. Correct tongue posture and function has a huge impact on overall health. It can influence facial growth and development, teeth alignment, postural alignment, immunity, sleep quality, oxygenation of the body, mood regulation, and more.
Orofacial myofunctional disorder (OMD) is any dysfunction of the oral and facial muscles that can impair proper growth, development, and/or function. OMD can exhibit a wide variety of symptoms.
Dysfunction can occur for a number of reasons. Sometimes it is due to physical restrictions like a tongue tie or a narrow palate. Other times it may be due to compensation patterns from a lifetime of using muscles incorrectly. While muscle dysfunction is quite common, that doesn't mean it's normal or good for your health.
Myofunctional therapy uses a natural approach to help your mouth and facial muscles work for you, instead of against you. Through exercise, repetition, and awareness, we will work together to alleviate symptoms, breathe better, feel better, and start to thrive. Phoenix Myo is here to help your rise up, restore balance, and start breathing your way to a healthier you.
Oromyofunctional therapy is only intended to improve tongue rest posture while encouraging optimal nasal breathing. We CANNOT diagnose or guarantee a cure for any symptoms listed above. Furthermore, we often work collaboratively with other providers who may provide diagnoses and treatment recommendations accordingly.
